Grugapark Essen

Such a big and beautiful park! I was impressed by the amount of activities you can do there, all of the courts, children playgrounds, barbecue spots, flowers areas! There’s so many things to see and explore:) There’s an animal park and it’s free but it’s available from 10-17 if I remember correctly, you can feed them:) and there’s a swimming pool area, but you have to pay additional fees. We bought year ticket and it’s about thirty euros, but normal entry costs five euro per adult and three per student. There also some little cafeterias and toilets for free:)

Definitely one of the best parks in Essen. There is 5 euro entry fee but the park is so big that you can spend an entire day there. Its ideal for family picnics.

It is a big park with many beautiful places to discover. There is a lake, waterfall, butterfly garden, places with owls, ponies, bunnies, and sheep. There are many parks where children can play, a labyrinth, a rose garden, a small theater, and a train guide. There are many more places to see and it is great to have an entire day, bring some snacks and drinks, maybe a book and enjoy the park. We had a wonderful time there.

I love this park so much. it holds little wonder . The nature here soothes the soul and body. This park consist of surprises and a good day like today was the best time for me and my family to be there, we had bunch of fun, the kids had the space to run and scream as much and on top of their voices. Everything was fine and our day was almost ending well until we discovered this part of the park where the birds are, precisely the huge enclosed place for he flamingoes and the other birds. This place really attracted us all, so we rushed in and my niece who had a ball in her hand mistakenly dropped the ball and it rolled in the pond, which i quickly dashed to fetch it immediately. In about 1 min after this, an older man who was dressed in a duty uniform who i guessed worked there and actually confirmed he works there approached us in front of these kids warned us in a hash manner while visitors stood and watched in silence. I mean, i rushed for this ball and quickly dropped it in our wagon(wagen in deutsch) so the kids don’t throw it back in the pond. But this man had the gut to be disrespectful and inconsiderate. He even dared to tell us if it happens again he would have to walk us out of the place. So i told him if he really noticed, i reached to get the ball that quick so where was the problem and why the need for all that warnings and unfriendliness. My sister was very sad and angry because after this tensed moment beside us stood a family I will guess were pure natives(Germans) with their son also standing close to the water the little boy was even at some point dipping his feet in the water, this man went to them played jokingly with their little son and smiled laughed with this family. He left us feeling not accepted. I took my family immediately out, then i went back in there to confront this man again, and when i got there he was sitting with another older woman also in the same uniform. So i told this man what he did back there was a no go and he could have approached us the right way. Maybe he could have even also jokingly tell my niece why it won’t be good idea to let the ball in the water. I mean she is even a kid for god sake, I would not say he treated us because of our skin color but that’s how it looked like. Out of almost 40 people visiting, it was only one visitor who came to my defense. He said he witnessed everything and also told this older guy he was wrong. I felt a bit relieved and left the place. I am disappointed! We are all humans why can’t we be genuinely humans? I will post pictures of this unforgettable moment. I still rate Grugapark but train your workers to be diversity inclusive. I won’t pay money for anything to just mess with my day again never. (17.08.2025 at 16: 52 )

This is a fantastic, spacious park for families. There's so much to do for an entire day—not just walking, but plenty of activities for both kids and adults. Be sure to bring cash, as they don't accept debit cards, despite some entrance gates reportedly accepting card payments.

So beautiful, just a wonderful park, if you are in Essen don’t miss it!!! Beautiful gardens with many flowers, waterfall, beautiful birds such as pelicans, flamingos, parrots and owls, there are ponds with little frogs, you can feed and pet goats, kids can ride a pony, there are few playgrounds as well, a maze, beach chairs around the whole park to have a rest or take a sunbath, picnic areas and tables. And a lovely train ride around the park. It was a beautiful experience for the whole family!

Grugapark is situated near Essen. ❤️Well maintained Botanical garden is very neat and clean. It's a beautiful place for all age group.very cam, pleasant atmosphere.. Hectares of land. Walking along the park. Different varieties of flowers,❤️❤️ trees, plants, an open air theatre also. Sometimes music programs are there. Ponds fountain, 😇it's really wonderful. Inside there was a small train.. ❤️Used this train for aged people.😂. There was a museum inside the park. Stuffed birds and animals there. It's Amazing. ❤️❤️ every weekends very big rush there. People came with their family and enjoyed the day. It's worth it. Kilometer of walking...Snacks and restaurants there. Don't miss it❤️

This park is huge and ideal for families with children. It is a park where you can spend your entire day relaxing and enjoying your day.

The entrance is pretty cheap i.e. 4€ per adult, but the food and drinks at the restaurant were a bit too pricey.

The best is to take your own picnic basket. There are plenty of nice spots to enjoy a picnic with your loved ones.

It's a very nice, large garden with lots of things to see. We saw tons of families enjoying the facilities, and there seemed to be a lot for the kids to do. We just happened to visit at the same time as there was a big fall exhibition of local producers, which was a neat experience. It is a very large park - it took us more than an hour to just walk the exterior trail around the northern end of the park at a casual pace, stopping to check things out. Be sure to plan things out in advance. Great options for families, and there are a lot of gardens with flowers and art scattered around. Admission was only 4 Euros a person for adults, which wasn't bad for the scale.

This is my favorite park in the world!! It’s HUGE, beautiful, and ever changing. I look forward to going back every time I leave.

It's a pretty good place for a nice walk. Especially when the sun is shining. At the moment, there are not so many flowers and plants, but it's a nice place to enjoy!

A great place for picnics and sunbathing. The children can also have plenty of fun in the park. If you're a student, don't forget to ask for a discount at the counter.

Very well tended and laid out gardens. We went in autumn when the leaves were turning a lovely red colour. Plenty of secluded and peaceful areas and I would love to see it in full bloom in the summer.

At first, the entry fee is 2€ for adult, and there are many entries to this particular place so if you're planning on visiting your friends at this place make sure at which entrance you're. Then once you step in, the place seems so serene and calm, as you start tracing your path in the park you'll fall in love with the place. But I feel the entrance fee of 2€ wasn't that worthy.

Perfect place to spend sunny day here. Has a big territory, different entertainments for children, a small contact zoo. There are a wide range of plants and flowers.

Neat and clean place. Had really fun walking around with kids and family. Best thing was wheel chair for old people, person who have difficulties walking. Info: at Haupteingang you will find wheel chair and you deposit 10€ at pick up time and get back as when you return it. Entrance price is 4€ for adult and for child under 5 are allowed free of cost.

It's just serene to visit... All the facilities and areas and displays just exemplify the experience. Has good places to sit back and relax, has some points for people who like to click pictures, has a good number of birds, animals and gardens. It is enough to keep you busy for over 4-5 hours.

Somewhat busy (maybe on a weekend only?), but truly amazing park, especially in late spring all in blossom. There was an jazz orchestra concert when we visited it. This added up to a festive mood. An exhibition of mini-railway is impressive. We also went as far as the bee-house and bought some fresh honey there.

Gorgeous park, many great areas. Something for adults, something for children. You can see birds or take a small train around the park. Have us a respite from the bussiness of Messe.

A perfect way to escape the city life. A big park in which you can do many things or nothing at all...and that ok This place is very relaxing. You can walk up and down and admire all sorts of plants and trees or you can just sit in the grass and watch the sky. Additionally you can enjoy some life classical music (romantic right?). Add a picnic basket to the mix and you are good to go. During the day you will be charged a entry fee of 4 EUR for adults and I believe after 18 (or could be 19) o'clock the entry is free. Once you see how much work goes into maintaining this park you will understand the need for a entry fee.

It's a very good place to spend the day! There are so many beautiful gardens. Waterfall stops after 6 pm.

It is a cool space to spend a Sunny relaxing day for walks. Especially that I visited in spring.

The botanical gardens are really expansive and we especially enjoyed the greenhouses with mix of tropical and desert plants. Pity that the owls had cages that were far too small. This should be addressed urgently.

Big, well ranged and beautiful park where you can chill out, sun bath or even hire a BBQ. Easy to arrive by public transportation (tram) I encourage you to go because is a festival for your senses.

Beautiful park, but the cages for the birds, especially for the owls, are way too small. Please do something about this! Birds are meant to be free, birds are meant to fly, not to be stuffed in a cage where they can hardly move around.

Very well maintained park. It has various lawns and lakes around it, also with some smaller botanical gardens inside. Furthermore, it also includes a mini farm with several typical farm animals (horses, pigs, poultry). There is an entry fee, but it is just symbolic : 2€ for adults and 1.2€ for students and elderly. Worth the money.

Such a beautiful park, plenty of playgrounds, amazing animals and pretty flowers. We spent the whole day here and plan on going again before we leave.

Grugapark is a favorite place to visit during weekdays and weekends. It’s green and colorful. In general, the park is in excellent conditions. There are multiple children playgrounds and other attractions. I never went on the meadows before. Now I have a child who wants to explore and crawl around. To my disappointment I found out that I can’t really let him do this as the green fields are polluted with ducks excrements. At first I thought that I’m walking on a meadow designated for dogs but then I noticed the little presents on every green field we stepped on which is also occupied by the ducks. I know it is natural but still it’s quite disgusting.

This place is incredible. At every corner you get a different flower smell (11 june). We enjoyed a really long walk and no setting is the same. This place is very diverse in it's design. We would definately recomend for a stroll. Too bad we didnt bring our chldren, and luckily we didn't at the same time. 😊

Good place to spend a bright day... Taking in d sun.. Walking around d various small sectioned gardens from across world... Play area for kids... Animal petting area... Etc.. Lots to do with kids or alone...

I visited it at the end of Winter, when many attractions were close :( But still it made me a very good impression. It is a very beautiful park, and it is huge so everyone can find a preferred place. So far mine was at the lake, and the large green fields. I will visit for sure again in summer :)

Went there on 18.4.2021. Very beautiful park perfectly maintained with flowers/ blumen everywhere and a round circle of flower arrangement in middle of park. The whole round tour is absolutely must. 2€ entry fee and has a restaurant (closed due to corona). Small lakes with super beautiful mallards inside, eating and having fun. Many sitting areas and chairs placed for secluded sittings. Perfect if you take your own coffee and small lunch with you. The small lake has wooden platform with benches and ducks doing their thing. Super relaxing.

Best park in the world, no joke. There is a small entry fee but it was so worth it. I loved seeing the rose garden and the petting zoo. Super well maintained.

A beautiful botanical park! Very clear and peaceful! If you want to refresh and reconnect your mind it is the place to be!

It is a real lung for the city of Essen!! The best place to relax! Small lakes, a big variety of special plants and birds and the wonderful building of Hundertwasser are some of the reasons to visit it!!

I would spend every day here if i lived in Essen. Such a great park! 100 percent worth the 5€ entrance fee. Amazing for kids! Playgrounds everywhere. Bring cash! Most places don't take card inside.

As usual a great stay with plenty of opportunities. Spacey park with playgrounds, green areas, waterfalls, a small railway, flowers, animals...

A nice place for a walk either alone or with the family. There are also few restaurants and beer garden. You can also enjoy jogging.

The garden was established in 1927 for recreation, teaching, and research. Parts of the garden were destroyed in World War II but gradually rebuilt and re-designed for the Essen Bundesgartenschau of 1965.

The garden also includes three greenhouses, built in 1985, for its tropical rainforest collection, succulents, and primeval plants from Australia and tropical South East Asia. Other features of interest include a bonsai garden, a scenic pond (the Margarethensee), and a Ronald McDonald House designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 2005.

It is OK. It is not the best park I have ever seen. I have even seen better ones for free of charge!!! If you have nothing to do, then go there.

This park is fantastic for a day out with the kids , loads for them to do... From slides to swing's from swing's to climbing frames , absolutely worth the money ...I can recommend it

A very nice and chill place to go during the weekend or another occasions. It is very family friendly and one can walk for hours without being able to check the whole park. I think the admission fee of 4€ (adults, 2.50 for students) is worth it, having in mind that you can chill in beautiful big valleys, see different gardens or play games and even have a BBQ. I would say it makes sense to go in the morning so that you are able to see most of the park without being in a rush. If you are not in a mood for walking, you can catch a small inside train which costs around 3€ for adults and 1.50 for kids (+50 cents if you have luggage).

The park by itself is not bad at all, its big and good for a walk! But the light show 🤦 what a failure!! Was clear they had no budget and no creative people to plan this!

I was last year in a light show in Benrath Düsseldorf and i was impressed! But this one was sooooo bad.. another level of bad. Waste of 9€s and energy.

I recommend you go early to have time to explore the whole park! It is so beautiful and spacious! A lot of room for picnics, playing and sightseeing! I recommend you pack a days worth of snacks and drink to cover for the whole trip! The entry fee is inexpensive and you get your moneys worth here.

Very beautiful place! We just didn't find any water fountain to fill out water bottles. In the summer that would be really helpful.

One of the must see places to visit in Essen. Not just a well maintained park. But also a lot of history related to Essen’s legacy of being the industrial heart of Germany. A lot of activities you can do there.

Fantastic place to spend the day especially for kids. Huge park with various animals and birds exhibit. There is a train inside to take you around and various shops for food and drinks. They also have a petting zoo for domestic animals.
